Using AutoCAD Data in ArcGIS

Course Overview:

With the ever increasing need for design and GIS professionals to share data, it is critical that GIS users understand and are able to make use of data created with Autodesk’s AutoCAD® or similar software. Using AutoCAD Data in ArcGIS is a two day course, created by eGIS Associates' experienced instructors, that explains the various CAD data formats and how to integrate them into standard ESRI data formats such as shapefiles and geodatabases.

Target Audience:

This course is designed for those familiar with ESRI’s ArcGIS Desktop software and that need to integrate drawing files created with CAD software such as AutoCAD, IntelliCAD, TurboCAD, or Civil 3D.

Prerequisites and recommendations:

Students taking this course should have taken ArcGIS Desktop II or have similar real world experience. No previ-ous experience with AutoCAD or other CAD soft is needed.

Course Goals:

After successfully completing this course, you will have acquired an understanding of Autodesk’s DWG and DXF formats and how to use these files in ArcGIS Desktop. These new skills include:

  • Understanding the DWG/DXF file format
  • View DWG/DXF’s in ArcCatalog
  • Add DWG/DXF files as a layer in ArcMap
  • How to query and symbolize using standard DWG attributes
  • How to convert DWG data to a geodatabase or shapefile
  • How to georeference and spatially adjust a DWG
  • How to use and convert DWG Annotation
  • How to export to a CAD drawing

Required Hardware & Software:

The following is required to take this course: ArcGIS Desktop 9.3 (ArcView, ArcEditor, or ArcInfo) Internet Browser (Internet Explore 7 or higher recommended) Windows XP, Vista or 7 CD-ROM or DVD-ROM

Cost and to order:

The fee for regularly scheduled instructor led or virtual classroom classes is $750.00 per student.
