Geospatial Training

Geodatabases, Linear Referencing & Geometric Networks

Course Developed by Juniper GIS

Course Overview:

This 3 day course is designed to introduces users to the Geodatabase, a data format that provides enhanced tools for data creation, data modeling, and data validation. Participants will learn how to design, create and manage Geodatabases. At the end of the course, students will have an in-depth understanding of the Geodatabase structure and Geodatabase tools for creating and editing data while maintaining data integrity, and will develop a solid foundation for future development into SDE. These tools include subtypes and domains, topology, linear referencing (routes), and Geometric Networks. Since one of the strengths of a Geodatabase is to validate and correct data, there will be sev-eral sections on editing, particularly with specialized Geodatabase editing tools, as well as map topology tools and other advanced editing methods.

This course consists of three sections. In the first section of the class, students will learn Geodatabase basics, includ-ing subtypes, domains, topology, and managing raster images. This section also includes a lesson on georeferencing images and tricks for on-screen digitizing. The second section focuses on Linear Referencing. In this section students will learn how to create routes and use dynamic segmentation for analysis and data display. In the third and final sections students will be introduced to Geometric Networks. They will work on a project converting AutoCAD water line data to a geometric network in a geodatabase, and set rules for automating data entry. After updating the geodatabase, students will learn how to use the geometric network for analysis, such as tracing water flow along the network.

Target Audience:

This course is for ArcGIS users that are responsible for designing, updating or maintaining their organizations GIS Database. It is also for anyone using the GIS to model utilities, stream networks or other line based systems.

Prerequisites and recommendations:

Students taking this class should have also completed the ArcGIS Desktop 1, Desktop 2 and Desktop 3 courses or have equivalent real world experience.

Topics Covered:

After successfully completing this course you will have acquired an understanding of the Esri Geodatabase format
and how it can be used to ensure data integrity and model linear systems. Topics covered include:

  • Geodatabase concepts and basics
  • Converting data to the Geodatabase format
  • Understanding Spatial References
  • Validating attributes with Domains/Subtypes
  • Validating features with Topology
  • Editing with the Geodatabase
  • Spatial Adjustment & Attribute Transfer
  • Geometric Networks
  • Editing Networks
  • Network Analysis
  • Working with routes
  • Linking to external database
